SolusOS 1.3 Released

The SolusOS Team are pleased to announce the release of SolusOS Eveline 1.3. This is strictly a maintenance release, and includes base system adjustments and updates not present in the 1.2 release. This release is available in the following architectures: x86, x86 with PAE, amd64

What's new?

Between the 1.2 release and this release, there have been over 300MB in package updates. This ISO is fully up to date and includes (but is not limited to) the following software versions:

  • Firefox 18.0.2 (19.0 will be provided when released)
  • Thunderbird 17.0
  • Linux Kernel 3.3.6
  • GNOME 2.30
  • sudo 1.8.5
  • ufw 0.31
  • SolusCC 1.3

The GConf defaults were totally redone, removing the duplicate Cardapio issue. Firefox is now the default web browser, screensaver locking + DPMS have been switched off by default. The "vga=792" parameter is gone from the boot line, preventing issues for nvidia users. We've also revamped the artwork somewhat, giving Eveline a cleaner look. Some older undeeded packages have been removed in an effort to clean up the base system

No kernel update

We investigated the possibility of including a kernel update in 1.3, but it caused far more problems than it solved. Being a stable release we cannot attempt to introduce anything that will cause issues within the system. Kernel upgrade paths will be handled by soluscc in the near future

The Future

We are now moving all of our development focus to SolusOS 2. As most will know, Debian Squeeze is soon to become "old-stable". We will continue to support SolusOS Eveline until old-stable is no longer supported. However this will be general maintenance. We need to now focus all of our efforts on readying SolusOS 2, and welcoming it to the family. We'll be keeping you all updated with our developments in this time, and are currently investigating multiple avenues to ensure SolusOS 2 is 100% rock solid by the time its ready for general release. In the mean time you can continue to use SolusOS Eveline as we get the next system ready for your use :)

SolusCC and the First Run Wizard

We have now officially dropped the FirstRunWizard, which provided first time configuration of certain system components. However it was a rather simple tool and quite error prone. Users will now find the SolusOS Control Center in their menus, which contains configuration utilities for common sound issues with PulseAudio, an update frequency manager and a new driver installer. If your system is capable of running either the nvidia or fglrx (AMD) proprietary drivers, the option will be present under Configuration -> Drivers. Please do not close the tool until the progressbar states "Driver Configuration Complete". You can also use this tool to remove the proprietary drivers from your system
