Regarding 64-bit Edition

Just a quick update so everyone is informed, I’ve just begun setting up a 64-bit development rig. I don’t want people to wait any longer than they have to for the 64-bit edition. I’ll be working from tonight onwards, its essentially a case of rebuilding most of our packages for 64-bit and then putting a test ISO together. The team and myself are confident we can get a release out this week.

We will need extensive feedback, so if you’re on the IRC channels please be prepared to be plagued with requests :)

SolusOS 2 - The Future

So what’s happening after Eveline? SolusOS 2 will be based on Debian Wheezy, which will become the next stable release of Debian in the not too distant future. We’ve been asked by people to use MATE, but we see little point in this. We intend to remain compatible with the rest of the Gnome world.

Our solution? We’re working away on our own customised version of the Gnome 3 Fallback Session. It will look, feel and behave exactly the same as Gnome 2 on SolusOS Eveline. We’ve had success already in porting the old Gnome applet bindings to Gnome 3. SolusOS 2 will not required any hardware acceleration nor a hardware upgrade. We’ll still be using gnome-panel (albeit customised) and the Metacity window manager. Our intention is to make the desktops of SolusOS 1 and 2 identical in every respect, which means making the old bindings, applets, utilities, etc, work with our Gnome 3 customisations in SolusOS.

So don’t panic, we’re not flogging a dead horse :) We’re fully aware Gnome 2 will no longer be developed and we’ve already worked out our next step. We’re entirely confident we can provide a stable upgrade route, and a desktop that you will be happy with. We don’t like forcing users into decisions so we’re gonna do what we do best, giving you the exact same desktop experience, new apps and 100% stability and lightning speed that you’ve become accustomed to.

Great news!I wrote a few suggestions on the forum, maybe you want to take a look at them

Excellent news, but it’s a shame when we leave Gnome 2, I really like. I’m not used to Gnome 3 Shell, I do not like

    • Sergio Esaù Aràmbula Duràn

Yoyo Fernandez I hope the same thing, a Solus OS Gnome 3 failback mode like a Solus OS Gnome 2 desktop

    • Daniel4m

      Gnome 3 != Gnome Shell
You can use Gnome 3 Classic(Fallback) mode or Gnome Shell(which is a shell)

      • SolusOS 2 will use the Gnome 3 Fallback mode tweaked in a way that it looks and acts like the current SolusOS 1.

Gnome Shell won’t be included as far as i know.

  3. Looking forward to both the 64-bit SolusOS 1 and SolusOS 2. Gonna be great!

  4. I absolutely love SolusOS and have been happy using it. I am very much looking forward to 64 bit version.

In regards to SolusOS 2 and Gnome 3, every version of Gnome 3 I have tested has NOT able to run Compiz and Emerald theme maker and Fusion-icon, without the panel disappearing completely. I have had to use cairo dock to find my applications with no panel or menu. Since I love the customization of Compiz, and Emerald, I have had to go to Xfce 64 bit. Will you be making these programs work and still use Gnome 3? If not it is a pity.

What a shame the Gnome developers don’t think like you guys. Keep up the good work!

Currently I have overheating issue on my Vaio VPCCB15FG laptop (on every linux distro i tried) – it has radeon switchable graphics card. I read on google that kernel 3.2.5 may fix this.
Would you please integrate the fix on the 64bit release please?
    Pleaseeee…??
I really look forward to be able to use SolusOs on my laptop without overheat issue.. Thanks a lot.
    Please dear sirs..

    Fantastic news, great job guys.

  8. if SolusOS’s future is going to be based upon gnome 3 fallback mode… what will you do when gnome eventually remove fallback mode ‘which they have said will happen in the future’????

the Future of MATE being compatible with the rest of the gnome world will probably depend on if they manage to port to gtk3 in future… fallback mode is a temporary solution it seems… Might aswell bite the bullet and extend gnome-shell to be gnome 2 like… but I know you guys want to keep 2d compatibility… so really… both solutions are not the answer since 1 is 3d and the other will be removed in future… ‘unless there will be some way of keeping fallback mode compatible in the longterm even after gnome take it away from gnome3+’

Makes me think xfce is the only logical answer but configured to be as gnome2 like as possible… no 3d, stable, configurable, porting to gtk3 next version if they are confident it will be 100% stable…

see my dilemma? lol… any logical response to my thoughts? maybe i’m just over paranoid. lol

Hi Ikey, my compliments to you and your staff. I had a look of Eveline and I liked it very much, so I’m waiting for the 64bit release.
I think getting stick to only one DE environment won’t help ye a lot. You can keep Gnome as preferred DE, but I would give a chance also to KDE and Xfce enthusiast.
    Keep going this way lads!!

  10. My son and I just installed your OS on a laptop Presario V6000 series and all is well except the touchpad does not work. The buttons work but when you tap the touchpad to make a click nothing works. Any ideas anyone??? Thanks Kirk

    • Yep go to control center and mouse options, you’ll find the tap-to-click stuff in the touchpad settings :)

  11. Manmath Sahu one of my friend praised a lot about you (Ikey). So I had to try SolusOS. I would say that I am very much impressed. SolusOS seems to be the great start for the newbie like me who likes the stability and speed of Debian but are afraid of using Terminal and configuring many things on our own. The start seems better than LMDE as SolusOS on the very start gives options for graphic card etc.

I tried it first in VB and then on computer. At both the time menu hanged on the very first boot and there was no response. So rebooted through terminal. Now it is working fine in my VB but it is having some issues on my computer in respect of menu. Any suggestions?

I am definitely looking forward for 64 bit and hope these small problems will be solved. Up till then I am using it in my VB. Regards.

The plans sound great. Real strong thinking, guys. I’m just waiting for the 64-bit to really dive in.

Quick question: It sounds like Solus 1 (Gnome2) and Solus 2 (customized Gnome3 fallback) will be quite different under the hood. Will a reinstall be necessary to go from 1 to 2, or do you think there’ll be an upgrade path?

    • bdantas

I reread the post and found the answer to my question: “We’re entirely confident we can provide a stable upgrade route.” Sorry for the stupid question.

Guys, this project is SO awesome. A linux distro with a Debian stable base, up-to-date applications, no desktop environment surprises, and no need to ever reinstall is what a LOT of people are looking for. I wish I could help with coding but, given that I am not a developer, I already started helping in the ways that I can: By spreading the word and donating. I wish I could help more. Once the 64-bit is out, I’ll be a full-time user and you can count on bug reports (if there are any bugs to be found haha). SolusOS will be going on my friends’ machines, too. Keep up the strong work, and onwards to #1 on DistroWatch!

      • Thank you very much :) We’ll try the best we can to keep providing the same deal, and I’m happy
so many people want to contribute and are happy to use our system. Thanks for being a user :)
I’ve made a lot of headway on 64-bit and I’m now compiling the kernel for it :) )

Hi Ikey, can’t wait for the 64 bit version! Just wanted to know if Wine will be included or available in the repos as that’s the one problem I have right now is getting Wine to work, can sort of get 1.3 to work but 1.4 and 1.5 just refuse to work at all. I’m using LMDE at the moment because half my hardware has trouble running under 32 bit (god knows why) so I’m really looking forward to SolusOS 64 bit. Keep up the fantastic work!

    • We have a “wine-unstable” and “wine-gecko” package which is actually Wine 1.5 :)
Its already there and works pretty good tbh :)

  14. Guys… I love you… I really do! Debian stable + Gnome 2 + out of the box experience = Epic. I haven’t tried it yet (I’m waiting for 64 bit version), but I have seen some reviews on youtube (Linux4UnMe …) and I must say, great job… Just keep up the good work!

  15. Cool

  16. Sergio Esaù Aràmbula Duràn

Please make Gnome 3 exactly like the Solus OS’s Gnome 2 desktop whith Cardapio and all that, If you do it I will use Solus OS for all my life; I like it but I can not use my dear VBA-M on the current stable Solus OS 1 but I like it’s desktop

  17. ill wait for the 64 bit version but from what i see on distrowatch you guys are #2 this week beating out ubuntu, the fact you keep rising tells me people are liking this distro and you may even dethrone mint if this keeps up lol

  18. Miguel Uribe Uribe

Solus OS, very good, beautiful and fast, thank you, thank you ………..

Thanks for remembering the Spanish language of Latin America, thanks, thanks………….

    God bless you.

  19. Bernard

Love Solus and altho Turboprint works great when connected to my Canon MG6250 by USB it doesn’t work by wireless. Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    • Would probably be best to ask on the forums Bernard, we have a very helpful group of people :)

  20. Uncle Spellbinder

Great news. Looking forward to a 64-bit version. And SolusOS 2 sounds like it’s going to be great!

    • We sure think so :)

      • Uncle Spellbinder

I gotta say thank you. I think a lot of people take for granted the work done on Linux OS’s in general. They are free to use and so much work is done by unpaid, unglorified developers, coders and other volunteer devs. And Solus OS is no different. You guys rock and thanks so much for all the hard work!

  21. mikef90000

Ikey, I must say I like your approach to a stable yet advanced **Debian** based desktop. Version 1 looks very polished and pretty.
However, after using XFCE 4.8 for months I can’t get excited over a GNOME 2 look-and-feel any more. Somewhere some customizability fell by the wayside.
I like to have two panels for ‘favorite apps’ and documents (XFCE directory menu), only using the menu to launch less used apps. Perhaps I should reload Debian Squeeze in a VM for a flashback ….
Is multiple workspace support coming soon? I thought that every DE included that.
Looking forward to SolusOS v2 64 bit with XFCE 4.8!
Thanks for your great work, Mike

  22. mikef90000

OOPS – Cancel most of my above comment, somehow a brain cramp overlooked the standard GNOME 2 panel features and workspace switcher applet.
I’m still not inclined to use the menu customization – the ‘View’ column just gets too crowded.
    Regards, Mike

    • Well you can switch the menu to one of many alternatives :)

  23. Doing a great job Ikey. I have been giving 32 bit version a good workout while waiting for 64bit and loving it. Take your time over 64bit it will bge worth the wait, after all this is debian.. it will be yeady whenits ready :)

    Fantastic distro.

    • Thanks ! :) A lot of work has already been completed on the 64-bit edition :) )

  24. So how can we test the 64-bit edition, is there a RC edition?

  25. Plinio da Silva

    Great job! Love it.

Fantastic distro! A couple of things; has the problem been sorted out with the mencoder/devede installation yet? I’m not going to do a full install until this little bug has been fixed and waiting for the 64-bit version..my laptop has win 7 on it and the only way i managed to get solus os 1 installed on it and working as a dual-boot was to follow the linux mint debian dual-boot guide that’s found by googling it.. keep up the great work!

  27. I wondered why both mate and cinnamon diddnt fork gnome 3 fallback instead of gnome 2 and 3 like they did, any idea why

  28. Wonderful start. Waiting for 64 bit. In the meantime installed Eveline 32 bit in VB and just playing with it. Please work on fonts.

  29. Miguel Uribe Uribe

    Please, When Solus OS 2?
    Thanks.

  30. trash80

Any OS that has inxi installed by default is awesome ;-)

ikey, I’m patiently waiting for the 64bit version.

I won’t run gnome3 at home, only because it doesn’t support more than 2 monitors.

    Keep up the good work!

  31. Solus OS, very good, beautiful and fast, thank you, thank you but ill wait for the 64 bit version

  32. Roberto

    Grazie ragazzi!Ottimo lavoro!

  33. Ikey, your avatar looks very angry. Are you getting enough sleep?
