  1. Congrats Ikey! Well done! (fyi, the Download link in the blog post is missing its trailing slash)

    • Thanks mate :) (Fixed the link too, cheers :D )

    • Hello, i installed with big pleasure solusos and i’m really happy! i like it a lot! I’m so happy to see that Gnome 2 didn’t disappear and that there is people that is not thinking only to appearence! Anyway i just found out that adobe flash player has got problem, when i’m going on youtube or other streaming site, it is crashing, and sometimes i can’t watch any video. Does someone know if there is solution? Thx a lot ;)

  2. I also noticed that installation issue. Anyway, it doesn’t matter anymore. Thank you very much !

  3. Nice one, need more torrent peers :P :D

    • Give it a small while I’m sure people will start seeding :)

  4. That’s why I visit distrowatch.com everyday, before the news! :D

    Thanks!

  5. I am trying it on live cd, are there any help tutorials on how to install?

    • The guys on the IRC are very helpful, try the Community -> IRC link :)

      • Thanks, this looks a real nice release.

      • coolpup

So, what is the IRC channel? Clicking on the link in the community section doesn’t get me there.

        • it works correctly as I tested, however you may need to setup your browser to handle link correctly for you. server: irc.silverirc.com/6667

I am a current LMDE user. I must say that the idea of rolling distribution built on Debian stable but with up-to-date applications is absolutely brilliant. I tried Solus RC4 and was very impressed–the OS is beautiful, everything seems well-integrated, and the system is noticeably more responsive than LMDE (faster boot, menus load faster, applications launch faster). When the 64-bit release comes out I will seriously consider switching from LMDE. Just two concerns:
-I am concerned about what will happen when the next Debian stable release comes out with Gnome3. If Ikey’s idea of building extensions for Gnome3 fallback mode to make it like Gnome2 is as good as MATE, why did the MATE team put in so much effort to fork the entire Gnome2 code? How will Gnome3 fallback + extensions compare to MATE?
-It seems that SolusOS is mostly a one-man effort. Ikey, how certain are you that you can keep this going? Are you getting help?

I am very excited about your project and look forward to the 64-bit edition.

P.S. I use msort quite a bit to alphabetize text files in foreign languages, but this package is not in the Debian stable repositories. Would you kindly package it for Solus?

    • justin

      bdantas,

Thank you for the kind words. We are working on the ideas for future releases and the work we will have to go with Gnome 3. Forking Gnome 2 is not in our plans at the current time.

SolusOS is not a one person effort – I would say you can look on the About > Meet The Team page and you will see I am also assisting him. There are several key community members backing us up.

    • I’ll get msort done soon enough. SolusOS is not a one man effort we have an actual team :)
      Check /meet-the-team :)

      • bdantas

Thanks, Justin and Ikey–I checked out Meet the Team and it was reassuring :)

I wish you guys all the best with this great project. Count me among the users once the 64-bit version comes out!

Downloading and spreading the news. Tremendous job, congratulations ;-)

  8. robert

    Install error.
Manage to install Solus OS on a USB stick via unetbootin, boot system ok. Live system is ok (or i suppose is).
Install wizard freezes at ghostscript package copy (/Ghostscript/…/Resources/CMap).
I don’t know if it works from DVD disc but from an USB stick is not.

    • roberto

Burn a DVD and everything went smoothly.

A problem: by default, it is impossible to browse Windows computers on a network via Nautilus.

After “ufw disable && service samba restart” is ok. But, is someone smart enough to create a rule for ufw/gufw firewall to allow network browsing and still have a firewall active?

      Kudos to SolusOS team!

    • Mauricio

      hey robert

try whit universal usb instaler, and select other new distros, this work for me.

  9. John Keens

I think the md5 sum needs a zero at the front.
    Other than that FANTASTIC !!!

  10. Susan "Suhana" Vash

Testing, it seems, is still not quite polished…

    http://node86.co.uk/pastebin/WV25J/

    • Suhana it’s based on stable not testing. A missing 0 in the md5sum I am aware of.

  11. Gardener

    Hi,
Thanks for your hardwork in SolusOS.
I just downloaded the ISO, then use Unetbootin to see the live environment.
But end up with user login name and password after booting.

Did I miss something or what’s the user login name & password, please?

  12. Very nice man, thank you for this wonderfull distro really enyoing it.
    Looking forward to the 64-bit

    • Not too long to go :D

      • ruisim

        Greetings from Portugal.
im going to install a 64-bit desktop next weekend.. SolusOS will be my distro?

Thanks for your great job Ikey. :)

  13. Thomas Fricke

hello ikey! many thanks for this great and good linux! I am big fan from now

on SolusOs! Greetings from Germany :-) by thomas !

sorry my english ist not perfect !!!

  15. Very nice, quick and snappy, easy install.
    Migration was flawless!

64bit is desired, but maybe it makes no real difference.

It is comforting to know that Ikey is not alone in this effort… I wish I had the skills to help in some way.

    Seeding from two machines now…
and a Ditto the desire for more language support.

    • We’re working on proper language tools too so no worries

  16. jose carlos

Hello,I’m from spain,my englisg is very short, but…. I,m very happy with this distro,it’s very nice, but still there is somethings a little greens,by example:I can’t install devede and little more, thank you for your job.

    • justin

      Hi Jose,

There are packages being held back in the Debian Multimedia repo. These are outside of our control but we are looking to address. Thank you very much for your feedback and we hope you enjoy SolusOS.

  17. jarjar

    ikey,

first of all, thanks so much. this looks really cool.

i tried rc4 on home pc. liked it very much, although only had time to fiddle with it just before going to work. but in the short amount of time, it is largely configured the way i want it. that says a lot. i have an nvidia card, and i am having great difficulty with many of the latest releases getting graphics to behave as smoothly as they should. but when i get home, i will be able to test it more fully, can’t wait.

also tried it on a test work pc with AMD. not so lucky. Firstrun wizard seemed to install everything correctly, but trying to launch amdcccle failed completely. compiz –replace failed completely. any ideas? was that perhaps addressed in the final?

i’m also intrigued to know what your plans are on the DE front. any thoughts of KDE?

anyway, for something that seems to have popped out of nowhere, it looks very promising. thanks again.

  18. bharry

Congratulations to Ikey & all the team. Looking forward to an update path.

  19. herypootel

Great news about the release – been trying it out in a VM for the last few RCs and i love it.
Any news on the ‘Install to RAID’ front? I’d love to replace my ubuntu 11.10 install with Solus, but i can’t choose my RAID array as an install destination…

  20. Colin Wright

Just downloaded and installed Solus OS Final 1 after having tried RC4 and loving it….sadly i had serious problems trying to install Acetoneiso and Devede from synaptic (by getting mencoder first)…..’the following packages have unresolvable dependencies…..mencoder:
Depends: libavcodec53 but it is not going to be installed or
libavcodec-extra-53 (>=4:0.8-2~) but 4:0.7.2.1~bpo60+1 is to be installed
Depends: libavformat53 but it is not going to be installed or
libavformat-extra-53 (>=4:0.8-2~) but 4:0.7.2.1~bpo60+1 is to be installed
Depends: libavutil51 but it is not going to be installed or
libavutil-extra-51 (>=4:0.8-2~) but 4:0.7.2.1~bpo60+1 is to be installed
Depends: libpostproc52 (>=4:0.8-2~) but 4:0.7.2-1~bpo60+1 is to be installed or
libpostproc-extra-52 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libswscale2 but it is not going to be installed or
libswscale-extra-2 (>=4:0.8-2~) but 4:0.7.2.1~bpo60+1 is to be installed’….had exactly the same problems with linux mint debian but these were resolved when LMDE was updated very recently….please can this be sorted before Solus OS x 64 bit version is released? thanks in advance!

    • Hi Colin, could you please add this to the forums? thanks.

      • justin

        Hi Colin,

Those packages are part of Debian Multimedia and are unfortunately out of our control. We are looking to fix at our earliest – thank you very much for letting us know!

  21. Hello, all I can say is GNOME 2, weeee….
I have a question, can debian pacakges be installed, or have debian repositories already gone to gnome 3?
How long do you think SolusOS can have GNOME 2?

    • justin

      Hi Zoran,

You can install Debian packages fine as our base, Stable, is still using Gnome 2. We are working on a plan to eventually move to Gnome 3 but are going to work on it very slowly to ensure things are perfect. We are not wanting to jump in with both feet quite yet. Gnome 2 should still last for quite some time.

Any questions, please feel free to drop myself or Ikey a line.

  22. RaiLRaZ

Best distro I ever tried!!! I’m still using RC4…
It’s much better than LMDE, it’s amazing! i’m really enjoying it!!
I used smxi script to update kernel and nvidia drivers to their latest version( 3.2.0 & 295.49 ).
    Tnx for your hard work!!!

    • justin

      Heya RaiLRaZ!

Thanks so much for your kind words! I hope SolusOS serves you well. Feel free to stop by our forums or IRC!

      Justin

  23. Been playing with this for 6 hours now, loving it! Top work :)
And cheers to the IRC guys…

Thanks so much for your kind words! I hope you enjoy your SolusOS experience and remember we are always here to help!

  24. This distro really does look nice I must say. I would like to ask how the installation goes as compared to Mint Main? That is pretty much all I know. Thanks ;)

It’s a very user-friendly installer, Robin, and asks the same kind of questions as Mint. The only difference as far as I remember is that it asks what graphics driver from the available options you want installed.
For myself, I found the installation quick and easy and I think you will find it pretty much the same. Why not give it a go?

  25. manmath sahu

ikey, thanks a ton for building a great desktop os on debian stable. i’m using it on my home desktop. i’m looking forward to its 64-bit version to deploy on several other desktops.

Thanks so much for the kind words! I hope SolusOS continues to serve you well.

  26. Jumprit

    Hi, I can’t wait for 64 bit version :D
If I installed this 32 bit, then later just install 64 bit kernel when it available… Will it be just like that to migrate to 64 bit?
Or do I need to reinstall a 64 spin?
    Thanks for great distro :D

  27. Very nice distro! top notch everything works great out of the box. gnome 2 is still awesome and i can get good old compiz effects. thanks for the time and effort to make this!

  28. Hi, too have a latest version of chromium?

and thnx for ur awesome job ;)

    • justin

      Hi Wild,

Something we are looking into. Right now we are working to patch bugs and etc. before we start getting into some new software additions to maintain. It is most definitely on the radar screen because I am a big user of Chromium myself!

Cheers, and thank you for the kind words. Hope you enjoy SolusOS!

This thing is pretty awesome! I had RC4 and I imagine that whatever errors made it have no space on ~ in live system in a case (AthlonXP/GA7N400) might’ve been fixed? Even then when it looped forever configuring the bootblock or whatever, it turned out to have installed to a (16GB) USB 2.0 stick okay! Not only that, but as stable as Sneekylinux (YouTube) said it was. Thanks! Er…should one immediately do-over using the new release, or just update?

    • Kirk M

According to Ikey, the upgrade path from the RC to the final release should be in place in a day or so. Once it is then upgrading to the final shouldn’t be a problem. For myself (running RC3 right now) I intend see how the upgrade goes first and then do a clean install to see how that works. Then again, I’m an obsessive tinkerer.

  30. Very much liked what I read, downloaded the torrent and added to usb with unetbootin, but cannot connect to the net from it. Most odd. Looks nice and sounds quite ideal, a stable base with some fresher important pieces, but puzzled why can’t connect to net, on 2 separate devices. Will try again later.

  31. Hello ikey: Congratulations to you and your team for releasing this very polished and beautiful looking OS. SolusOS already has the look and feel of a classic distro’. I installed the RC4 on one of my boxes here (in the French Alpes) just a few days ago. I find it aesthetically very pleasing indeed. SolusOS got my laser printer up and working within minutes – an essential tool for me. It even got my very old and obscure sound card working perfectly right off the bat – amazing!
There are three tools that are essential for me at the moment: Blender, Gimp and Handbrake. If I could get the latest Gimp 2.8; the latest Blender 2.63 and the latest Handbrake 0.9.6 to work on my Solus box, then I would be very happy indeed. The new Gimp is such an important release that it would be a real shame if non-specialist (I mean Linux specialist)users of the tool were obliged to wait a year before it become available in the official repositories. I did try to get Gimp 2.8 by typing ‘apt-get install gimp’ in the terminal as Gimp.org recommends, but that just got me the old, 2.6 version… I actually installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a partition today in order to use Gimp 2.8. The installation of Gimp 2.8 on Ubuntu 12.04 is well documented on the internet. If the SolusOS team could crack this nut, then you might just win a few converts :)
    Anyway, best wishes and bravo!

  32. Congratulations for this beautiful release. I liked the Live Version so much I just went and installed it. But.

Installation went smooth; no problems at all. After that, I got problems with the graphics. I have an older Dell machine (Pentium 4, 1 GB RAM) and a somewhat new graphics card (ATI Radeon 6450).

The first boot brought me a split screen: the left 20% of the screen was on the right side. Funny, but better than the *buntus (where I only get a black screen with some mad flickering). The Wizard appeared and prompted me to install the proprietary driver, which I did, and then reboot, which I did. And then the black screen again. I rebooted into recovery mode, run “aticonfig –initial”, rebooted, but that didn’t improve things.

For comparison, after installing LMDE Xfce I can boot normally (it uses the free radeon driver) and can also install the fglrx-driver (which also works fine).

I’ll try another install and follow the other path (free driver instead of proprieray) when prompted by the Wizard. I’ll cross my fingers and hope it works — as I said, SolusOS really looks like a great distro.

    Cheers!

  33. Second install, and everything is fine. Again the split screen by the first boot after installation, but having chosen the experimental driver (radeon, I guess) made the difference. Things are now working very well.

Again, congratulations to the team for this beautiful distro!

  34. riespandi

I’am Debian fanatic and i have use SolusOS RC3..i think it’s an amazing Linux Distro..more Faster and more lightweight than Ubuntu or LMDE…

can your team add Google Chrome, gWget and Dropbox by default?

    Thanks

  35. Great Job! I’ve been working with Debian 6 stable because not many distros are based on the stable branch. SolusOS looks great. Very user friendly menu wich can easily compete with Mint. Well done!

  36. nobody

I am a Debian user, so I decided to try SolusOS… don’t know if it’s a driver issue or what, anyway as soon as the installation terminated and I rebooted the pc, the screen started to flash intensely and I never managed to see a splash screen, interface, command line or else. My gfx card is a Radeon HD 68xx and I never experienced such a problem with my previous Debian installations…

  37. nobody

The problem went away when I removed the “splash” and “vga” options from grub. However after logging in, the menu did not respond (everything else worked fine). I think I’ll stay with Debian for now.

  38. Mogens Petersen

Have tried RC3 and RC4 – I really like the Cardapio menu. Before I used LMDE.
But there is something wrong with the flashplayer – it crashes.
Have tried to use a newer libflashplayer.so in ~/.mozilla/plugins – it still crashes.
Have tried to install Google Chrome – but it still crashes.
    What is wrong?
The idea of the distro is good – before I have made my own – Debian Stable with mintmenu – it has not these problems.

  39. masmas

    I wait and hope for amd64 edition…

  40. Timothy

Hey Ikey and SolusOS team, You should add a startup disk creator tool (unetbootin) or some usable tool. This way it will be easy to do a fresh upgrade :) . Enjoying RC4 and awaiting upgrade guide!

  41. JackFlash

    Congratulations!!!! Very Good Job!!!!

This is going straight to may Laptop, which is already running RC3.

For my Desktop, I’m going to wait for the 64bit release, until then I’m sticking with Debian 6 Stable.

  42. Rob Jones

This looks very interesting my only concern is the name is too close to solaris and oi unix confusing users

    • The name is an irish word, Solus means “light” (old irish)
Nothing to do with Solaris :)

  43. “На живо” дистрибуцията работи перфектно. Не смея да я инсталирам, защото не знам дали има поддръжка на интерфейса на български език, така, както LMDE и Debian.
“Live” distribution works perfectly. I dare not install it because I do not know whether there is support for the Bulgarian language interface, as LMDE and Debian.

    • Hi CVD, sure mate it supports all languages same as loved Debian.. so If Debian is in Bulgarian language than SolusOS speaks Bulgarian as well! :)

  44. Kurosaki Ichigo

    Sorry my english isn’t good.
Ok, In the future could you put MATE desktop option to choose?

I know, you will modify Gnome 3 but i try the mint with MATE and it is very good and faster.

The last option is trinity desktop because is funcional and old ;)

Plese accept some suggestions made by me please.

I want support for other languages too ;)

  45. AviCom

    Just like !
No excess , a set of programs for the start of the normal and the rest you can always add to vkusu.Simpatichno up and running without any problems (yet)
The team – Good luck , and luck !

  46. I’m working with RC3 and I’m still looking for the new upgrade path to final release.
Can you help me to find it, please?

    Thanks and best regards ;D

    • Hi Peter, I think you should have look at solusos wiki or at the forums…

      • Yes, I do it but I find nothing.
        Last notice at Wiki
tutorials “Upgrading to a New Release”
        ends with =”SolusOS Eveline RC3″

Might be better to forget the upgrade and do a
        clean install of final release.

(PD: Sorry for my bad english)

  47. Leven Antov

    Hi folks,
I am quite impressed on this distro – all the new features and apps + familiar Gnome2 shell in a really polished set. Wonderful!
This is a top notch distro even for a very low spec machine. After installation it successfully runs on 192Mb mem and still runs fine, including DivX playback. Still it needs 512Mb to install.
    Keep the good work! (bow)

  48. Hi!!

What about upgrade path for SolusOS Eveline RC3 and others to final release?
Can anybody upgrade the wiki tutorial “Upgrading to a New Release”?

Great job guys, just need this small detail :D

    • the best way is clean fresh install Im afraid heh my suggestions are separate /home on biggest partition on your hdd.. for system which is / I would use 25Gigs and swap 5Gigs so next time you just just format partition of / and you’re done ;)

      • Ready, but the installer does not allow choosing different hard drives to mount root, home and swap. After installing “/” at “/dev/sda3″ and “/ home” (without to format) at “/dev/sda4″ I had to mount swap at “/dev/sdc3″ after installation by editing fstab.
I just had to reinstall some programs that have been configured automatically with existing data on /home.
        Everything works perfectly, thanks :D
